What is meant by Myanmar Junta?

Who is Junta? Is it a person or a group? From the news it appears that whoever it is, peoples of Myanmar do not like it. Could someone give me a little Myanmar-101 on this?

Currently, the general name is Than Shwe. The military has taken over the country since 1962, and there was a revolution in 1988 for democracy. Then, a new government came in, which is also military, and taken over.
So, to answer your question, the ruler is a person, but the entire country hate the miliary government, so it can be a group.

You answered my question... but now I have more questions - how did military form a govt if there was a revolution for democracy in 1988? if peoples of Myanmar have hated their rulers for such long period of time, then why are they living in this tyranny? 1962 to 2007 is a very long period!
As soon as we got our independence from the British at 1948, the country starts to deteriorate. Then, military takes over at 1962, and it's been ruling it since then, just by different leader. Then, there was a 1988 revolution.

People asked for democracy. Because of the situation, the current military leader steps down, another one comes up. At that period, we had like military leader for even as short as 9 days (I can't remember the excat date because I was too young).

Finally, the military shoots down the entire protest, as much as 3000 (official record) -10,000, mainly college students and put down the revolution. Then, they made a promise of giving us democracy and held an election around 1990.

The democratic leader, Aung San Su Kyi, won the election by like 90% of the vote. Then, they made up stuffs like the country is not stable and is not ready for a new leader, and never honor the result.

After that, Aung San Su Kyi was house arrested up until now and only been released for a year or so between. The current military government has been controlling since the 88 revolution.

And putting down all the protest by shooting with automatics or tanks, and jailing anyone who say or write a single bad thing about the government. That's why we are still under this current government. :)
